This is an urgent reminder that all UT Arlington laptop computers must be encrypted by August 31 in order to be in compliance with a mandate from UT System.
There are no exceptions to this mandate.
UT System institutions have experienced multiple security incidents recently in which encryption was not in place on computers that were either stolen or lost. Therefore, 100 percent compliance for the encryption process is necessary to avoid costly emergencies and exposure of sensitive information.
The Office of Information Technology has been offering encryption services since early July, but the campus response has been less than satisfactory. Only about 60 percent of laptops have been encrypted, with barely one week left to meet the deadline.
All colleges, schools, and units must make laptop encryption an immediate priority.
To have your laptop encrypted, please drop it off at the OIT lab in Room 231 of Nedderman Hall. Drop-off hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Normal processing time is 24 hours.
Users should back up their data prior to drop-off and must provide the computer's power cord. At the time of pickup, the computer user should be present in order to log into the machine to complete the encryption process. If users have already had SecureDoc software installed on their laptops, they do not need to do anything further.
Contact the OIT Help Desk (firstname.lastname@example.org) to make alternate drop-off and pickup arrangements.
If you have questions regarding this directive, please contact Dr. Maurice Leatherbury, vice president for information technology, at email@example.com or 817-272-5602. Many routine questions are addressed in a list of frequently asked questions prepared by OIT.
