The maximum amount of earnings subject to Social Security taxes will be $113,700 in 2013, up from $110,100 in 2012. The Medicare tax remains at 1.45 percent but a new add-on of 0.9 percent Medicare tax will apply to anyone who earns $200,000 or more annually. A decision about federal withholding rates has not been finalized by Congress.
