January paychecks reflect tax changes

UT Arlington employees subject to the federal payroll tax may notice a difference in their Jan. 2, 2013, paychecks compared with previous months.

A temporary payroll tax cut approved for 2012 by Congress will end Dec. 31. Social Security withholding will increase from 4.2 percent to 6.2 percent on the capped wage base. The maximum amount of earnings subject to Social Security taxes will be $113,700 in 2013, up from $110,100 in 2012.

The Medicare tax remains at 1.45 percent but a new add-on of 0.9 percent Medicare tax will apply to anyone who earns $200,000 or more annually.

A decision about federal withholding rates has not been finalized by Congress.

Employees with questions about the payroll tax adjustment may contact Payroll Services at 817-272-5426 or by email at payroll@uta.edu.
