Biography

Prior to joining UT Arlington, Herb was a senior reporter for The Dallas Morning News and its subsidiaries. He has reported or edited coverage about various cities, school districts, elections, businesses, sports and general interest for The Dallas Morning News, Arlington Morning News, Grand Prairie News, Garland News and Richardson News. While at the News, he and two other reporters earned the 2004 Fred M. Hechinger Grand Prize for Distinguished Education Reporting. He still writes a general interest, Sunday column about Grand Prairie for the News. Before the News, Herb served in various capacities for the Herald-News, a suburban weekly for communities near San Antonio. He also has worked in technology for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. He received a bachelor of journalism degree from The University of Texas at Austin. He lives in Grand Prairie.

Mission

The mission of the Office of Media Relations at The University of Texas at Arlington is to develop and communicate information regarding the University's academic activities, its community service role, and the achievements of its students, faculty, staff, and alumni to its various internal and external constituencies in order to enhance its position as a comprehensive educational institution.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitating news media relations including writing and distributing news releases and photos, contacting the media regarding UT Arlington faculty and staff who can respond as experts to current events, and fielding requests from the media
  • Maintaining an Experts Guide for the news media
  • Coordinating press conferences
  • Giving speeches regarding UT Arlington on and off campus
  • Providing stories for UT Arlington Magazine
  • Publishing annual, weekly, and specialty calendars of events
