Maverick Activities Center (MAC) Frequently Asked Questions

The MAC officially opens at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18, in a ribbon-cutting ceremony.  The following is some general information to help you become familiar with the new facility. 

MEMBERSHIP:

Who will be able to use the facility?
Student, faculty, staff, alumni, the community; as well as significant others of faculty, staff, students and guests.

Will the facility be open to the community?
Yes.

Who is eligible for a membership?
Anyone 18 years of age and over.

I  am a student but my friend is not. Is there a way my friend can work out with me?
They can purchase a guest pass for $5.00 a day and must stay with you.

What do I need to get in and use the facility?
Membership ID or MavExpress Card.

I don't have my card. Can I still get in?
Eventually, we will be using a hand scan and you will be able to get in with out your card.

How do I know if I am being charged the campus recreation fee?
If you are a student it is included in your tuition.

How much does it cost to join the MAC?
For faculty, staff and retirees: $20 per month, payable by monthly payroll deduction ($20), monthly payment ($20) at the MAC membership services, semester payment ($80) at the MAC membership services, or annual payment ($240) at the MAC membership services. Employee and student significant other: $85 per semester. Alumni: $375 per year. Community Members: $960 per year. Guest prices: $5 per visit.

Why isn't the MAC free for UT Arlington faculty and staff?
When the referendum was passed it was in agreement that faculty and staff would pay at least as much as students.  Please refer to State Statute 54.5122. (http://tlo2.tlc.state.tx.us/statutes/ed.toc.htm).


HOURS OF OPERATION:

How late will the facility be open?
During the Fall & Spring:
Monday–Friday: 6 a.m. to midnight
Saturday: Noon to 8 p.m.
Sunday: Noon to midnight

When can I bring my family to use the facility?
Faculty, staff and students may purchase a membership card (one per year) for their significant partner and dependent children 18 years of age and over. Proof of common residency must be present for significant partner membership. Membership cards entitle the holder to all privileges except purchasing guest passes. Children under 18 may enter the Activities Building for free accompanied, and under direct supervision at all times, by a parent or guardian.


WHAT IS OFFERED:

What new features will the MAC have?
It will include a 20,000 square-foot weight and fitness room (with more than 80 pieces of cardio equipment, three circuit training units and a free weight area); four multipurpose rooms to accommodate yoga, martial arts, aerobics and more; five indoor basketball courts; eight volleyball courts; and indoor soccer gymnasium; two indoor tracks; six racquetball courts; 10 badminton courts; a game room; a ‘social corridor’ with group seating, activity viewing and more; an internet caf頨wired and wireless connection) with a juice bar; men's and women's health club style locker rooms; Wellness Resource Center conference rooms; membership services; convenient parking and much more.

What kind of equipment is going to be available in the new weight room?
We will have the following:  Body Masters Premier Circuit (13 pieces); Life Fitness Signature Series Circuit (15 pieces); FreeMotion Circuit (13 pieces); free weights (dumbbells and weight plates) including benches and plate loaded (Brands – Body Masters and Hammer Strength).

Will there be locker-room facilities available to students?
Yes, health-club-style locker rooms will be available. Rental rates – ½ locker/towel:  $25/semester; full locker/towel:  $35/semester; towel only:  $15/semester.

Will there be any rock climbing classes for students, for credit or otherwise?
Not at this time.

Where can I find schedules for the pool, climbing wall, and fitness classes?

Where can I sign up for intramural and club sports?
Contact Drew Barfield at (817) 272-3277 or visit www.uta.edu/sportclubs and/or e-mail the president of the club you are interested in.  More information may also be obtained at the Information & Services Desk at the MAC (Rm. 100).

Who is eligible to play intramurals and where can I get information?

What are the pool hours for Fall/Spring (Indoor Pool)?
Monday:
Noon to 1:20 p.m. - Lap Swim
4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. - Lap Swim
8 p.m. to 10 p.m. - Recreational Swim

Tuesday:
6 p.m. to 8 p.m. - Lap Swim
8 p.m. to 10 p.m. - Recreational Swim

Wednesday:
Noon to 1:20 p.m. - Lap Swim
4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. - Lap Swim
8 p.m. to 10 p.m. - Recreational Swim

Thursday:

When are children allowed to use the pool facilities?
During the Summer (outdoor pool only), guest pass holders and children may enter with a current Mav Express ID holder. (Mav Express ID holder must remain with guest and/or child. Two guests per ID. Guests must be 18 years of age and over.)  Children under 16 must be accompanied by a parent at all times. (Summer-outdoor pool only); Children under 10 must have an adult in the water at all times. (Summer-outdoor pool only). No guest passes or children allowed in the indoor pool.

What is the pool temperature?
Varies (around 80 degrees).

What is the size of the pool? 
The indoor pool is 25 yards; the outdoor pool is 50 meters.


MISCELLANEOUS:

When will the MAC open?
The facility will open in two phases: Phase I in September 18, 2007 and Phase II in February 2008.

How big is the MAC?
The MAC will boast approximately 190,000 square feet -- 80,400 square feet of that is new construction, as well as improvements to 119,000 square feet of existing Activities Building space.

How much is the cost of construction?
$34.5 million.

Where is the money coming from?
The project is part of President James D. Spaniolo’s Student Life Initiative.  As such, it is being funded with bond proceeds, which will be repaid over 30 years with funds from the campus recreation fee.  In 2005, students passed a referendum to increase this fee to fund the improvements.  That fee will start being paid once the center opens in September 2007. 

Will varsity teams have priority in the new facility?
No.

What will the parking situation be like?
The existing parking lot will remain with plenty of parking.

Can students use the MAC over the summer if they are not taking summer classes?
Yes.

May I bring a guest to the MAC?
Yes. The cost of a guest is $5 per visit.

Can spaces in the MAC be rented?

What are fitness assessments, and do I need one?
A fitness test is used to estimate ones current fitness level and assists in beginning a new exercise and wellness program. You do not need to take one.
