ARLINGTON - The UT Arlington College of Business announced its Master of Science program in human resource management has earned full accreditation from the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), the world's largest professional association devoted to human resource management.
UT Arlington is now one of only 38 universities worldwide to have earned this distinction.
"UT Arlington's master of science in human resource management is the only graduate program of its kind in the North Texas region," said program coordinator and graduate adviser Dennis Veit. "This recognition by SHRM will give us higher exposure in the community and will be a catalyst for growing our program."
The degree program has 63 students and hopes to grow to about 75 soon, Veit said.
The program prepares students for advanced careers as human resource managers in corporate and industrial firms, as well as government and nonprofit organizations. Students must demonstrate mastery in 13 areas to attain SHRM certification.
The program also provides the breadth of an advanced business education and the depth of specialized human resource management training. It is tailored to working practitioners and future professionals alike.
The curriculum converges theory, research and practical applications of numerous content areas in the human resource field, including strategy and policy, career planning and development, employee relations law, conflict management, organizational change and development, employee selection, compensation, training and development, and employee diversity.
"It is a pleasure to earn such recognition," said Daniel Himarios, dean of the College of Business. "This graduate program is particularly critical to the North Texas region as the role and scope of the human resources function continues to grow in organizations. This certification acknowledges the program's world-class quality."
The Master of Science in Human Resource Management Advisory Council was established in 2007. The council consists of senior HR executives from many of the area's largest employers including American Airlines, Alcon, Lockheed Martin, BNSF, JP Morgan Chase, JC Penney and Fidelity Investments.
