ARLINGTON - HoverTech International recently donated more than $7,500 in patient transfer equipment to the Smart HospitalTM at The University of Texas at Arlington.

"One of our top priorities is teaching nursing students patient and workforce safety," said Karen B. Mullowney, senior director of development at UT Arlington. "We are so excited about having this exceptional equipment."

The donation included a heat-sealed HoverMatt® Transfer System and a HoverJackTM Air Patient Life, plus related support equipment. Both products use an air supply to lift and move patients, working similar to a hovercraft, which can reduce or eliminate injuries to hospital staff. The HoverMatt® is a specialized mattress designed to address infection control concerns by eliminating needle holes and sew lines. The HoverJackTM can raise a HoverMattR from the floor to the height of a stretcher of bed, making patient transfer easier for the patient and healthcare providers.

Studies show the HoverMatt® requires 93 percent less force than a draw sheet. The HoverJackTM increases patient comfort and decreases the risk of injury to healthcare providers.

A study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported back injuries in the healthcare industry total $20 billion annually. Also, the study noted healthcare workers experience back injuries more than workers in construction, mining and manufacturing.
