ARLINGTON - An agreement forged with Howard University designates The University of Texas at Arlington as a partner in the Howard University Pre-Faculty Internship Program.

The program (http://www.gs.howard.edu/PFF/default.htm) prepares students to enter the professoriate through a range of activities that include career planning workshops, seminars on instruction, new technologies for teaching and research, and campus visits to different institutions. At the end of the program, advanced doctoral students go through a selection process similar to an academic job search that may pair them with academic programs at partnering universities for a nine-month pre-faculty internship (http://www.gs.howard.edu/PFF/pfoverview.htm).

Philip Cohen, dean of the Graduate School and vice provost for Academic Affairs; along with faculty from UT Arlington's colleges of Science, Engineering and Liberal Arts; and the schools of Social Work, and Urban and Public Affairs visited Howard University to meet with key faculty, administrators and students in the program to celebrate the establishment of the program and to promote collaboration between faculties.

The goal of the partnership is to help UT Arlington's commitment to recruit faculty of color. Dr. Cohen noted that UT Arlington is participating in this program to help better prepare the faculty of the future and perhaps attract some of them to UT Arlington.

The agreement also could expand to other collaborative opportunities with Howard University, which produces the largest number of African American and other minority doctorate recipients from a single institution of higher education.
