ARLINGTON - The University of Texas at Arlington Department of Theatre Arts' spring musical will be the song-filled adaptation of Eudora Welty's famous novella "The Robber Bridegroom." The show will run at 8 p.m. March 4 through 7, and at 2:30 p.m. March 7 and 8 in the Mainstage Theatre in the Fine Arts Building, 502 S. Cooper St.
The story, set in Mississippi, has a fairytale quality and a cast of characters that includes a gentleman robber, the girl he craves, a village idiot, a greedy, sex-crazed stepmother and bumbling thieves who mistakenly kidnap the stepmother. The musical score is by Robert Waldman, with book and lyrics by Alfred Uhry.
Directed by Anne Healy, a lecturer in theatre arts, the production features UT Arlington students Chennel Ahmed as Airie, Lyssa Dennis as Raven, Jill Deramus as Rosamund, Wesley Farsworth as Goat, Porter Gandy as Big Harp and Melissa Kendall as Salome.
Other student performers are Shelley Ohmes as Goat's Mother, Jackie Pickard as Clement Musgrove, Alan Pollard as Jamie Lockhart and Jason Villarreal as Little Harp. Ensemble members are Andras Bodolai, Tracy Davis, Nyet-Abasi Edet, Tonya Free, Nick Gould, Stephen Howell, Tyson Jones, Andrea Lewis and Nikki Singer.
Michelle Harvey, Jared Land and Marla Grant, all theater arts specialists, are the set, lighting and sound and costume designers. Associate Professor Joe Kongevick serves as makeup designer, and Assistant Professor David Navalinsky is technical director and production manager. Theatre arts major Jacqueline Pettit is stage manager, assisted by students Miguel Marin and Philip Lambert.
