ARLINGTON - The public is invited to weigh in on federal stimulus funding for North Texas at a 10:30 a.m. state legislative hearing Saturday, March 14, in the Rio Grande Room of the E.H. Hereford University Center, 300 W. First St.
State Rep. Jim Dunnam, D-Waco, is chairman of the Select House Committee on Federal Economic Stabilization Funding. Committee members from North Texas include Reps. Myra Crownover, R-Lake Dallas; Carol Kent, D-Dallas; Jim Pitts, R-Waxahachie; and Vicki Truitt, R-Southlake.
Texas stands to receive $16 billion from federal stimulus funding, according to many accounts. North Texas' share varies, depending on the report.
Public officials and Texas residents have fallen into two general camps: those who view the stimulus funding as an opportunity to complete public works that otherwise may have been dormant for years, and those who argue that the stimulus funding will create unintended consequences and costs down the road.
Arlington city leaders, for example, have suggested spending some of the stimulus on a convention center expansion, a downtown parking garage, a shelter for the homeless and road projects, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and The Dallas Morning News.
The committee's charge - according to Chairman Dunnam's opening letter - is to "ensure that the funds are spent with accountability and transparency. We cannot waste tax dollars, or miss the opportunity to make this one-time source of funds for work for Texans."
See the committee's Web site for more on the stimulus funding and future hearings.
Parking for the event is on the F12 lot, just north of the University Center at UTA Boulevard and South West Street. Visit the UT Arlington Web site to view a campus map.
