ARLINGTON - The University of Texas at Arlington College of Science will host an ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp July 19 through 31. The camp is a two-week residential experience for 48 rising sixth through eighth grade students from the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
The camps are free, and all student expenses are paid for by the program. Harris, a medical doctor, businessman, former NASA astronaut and the first African American to walk in space, created the camps four years ago with support from ExxonMobil. Across the country, more than 1,500 students will take part in the camps this summer and explore themes such as "Mission to Mars," "Revolutionary Robotics," and "Energy and Motion."
Participants take daily classes in natural science, engineering, mathematics and technology taught by master teachers from the Dallas-Fort Worth area with help from UT Arlington faculty. Activities include labs; individual, team and group projects; weekly field excursions; and motivational guest speakers.
Students must be academically qualified, genuinely interested in mathematics and science and recommended by two teachers to apply to attend the ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camps. Applicants must be African American, Hispanic, Native American or qualify for free or reduced-price lunch at school. Applicants must have a B average in mathematics and science courses, score at least the median level on the math and science portions of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) and must write an essay.
Visit http://www.uta.edu/sciencecamp/ for more information and to download an application form. The form and required records and recommendations must be turned in to the UT Arlington College of Science by April 24.
