ARLINGTON - The 14th Annual Powwow sponsored by the University of Texas at Arlington Native American Student Association (NASA) will be from 2 to 10 p.m. Saturday, March 7, in the Bluebonnet Ballroom at the E.H. Hereford University Center, 300 W. First St. The American Indian Science and Engineering Society and The Honors College are sponsoring the event, along with NASA, to raise money for scholarships. The event has grown each year and it is now one of the largest powwows in the region, attracting hundreds of visitors annually.
The OtterTrail Drum Group, formed in 1992 in the Northeastern United States by Alexander Santos, will be the featured performer this year. OtterTrail is an intertribal southern style powwow singing group. Its name came from a suggestion by the late Johnny Lone Chief, who said the name should symbolize some aspect of southern style plains culture. Thus, the name OtterTrail was born and it represents a very important item of clothing worn by the southern straight dancer, the otter drag or trail. OtterTrail has been invited to participate as "Host Drum" at many gatherings, won drum contests at powwows throughout the country and has been nominated by the Grammy Awards for Best Producer of the Year with the Sound of America Records label.
Activities include opening prayers and gourd dancing beginning at 2 p.m. The Grand Entry will be at 5 p.m., followed by intertribal dancing. Native American merchandise will be available from select vendors. Indian tacos and fry bread will be available for donations. Admission is free and all are welcome.
