ARLINGTON - The University of Texas System Board of Regents voted May 14 to add a $67 million parking garage and residence hall project at UT Arlington's eastern edge to the System's capital improvement plan.

The residence halls would wrap around the parking garage on three sides, along South Pecan, West Second and South Center Streets.

The building will include retail and office space at the ground level, a University police satellite office and a plaza that will integrate the mixed-used project with the Special Events Center to the south.

"We appreciate the support of the UT System Regents as we continue to enhance our University and develop our vigorous campus life environment," UT Arlington President James D. Spaniolo said. "This mixed-use project will help address our community's parking needs. But we expect that it also will be a catalyst for further development in central Arlington."

The parking garage and residence hall project complements the city of Arlington's Center Street Pedestrian Trail project. In a separate action Thursday, Regents voted to allow UT Arlington to grant the city easements on about 5.4 acres along Center Street for a pedestrian plaza and hiking trail.

Thursday's vote allows UT Arlington to begin the process of identifying a project architect for the parking garage and residence hall. Construction would likely occur in two phases to minimize impact on the campus. The south garage is expected to be complete by summer 2011; the north garage would open in summer 2012.

UT Arlington plans to seek U.S. Green Building LEED certification for the project.
