ARLINGTON - High school students from throughout the Metroplex are being accepted for the Aspiring STARS Camp, an opportunity to practice hands-on nursing skills using patient simulators and a visit to the Smart HospitalTM at The University of Texas at Arlington.
Students can attend one of four camps sessions set for July 8-9, 15-16, 22-23 and 29-30.
Camp participants will learn about nursing through patient simulator demonstrations, presentations by career nurses and nursing students, and visits with healthcare professionals at area hospitals. Participating hospitals include Baylor All Saints Medical Center and Cook Children's Medical Center, both in Fort Worth; USMD Hospital at Arlington; Medical Center of Arlington; and Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas.
The students also will learn more about the processes of applying for college, financial aid and scholarships.
UT Arlington's School of Nursing will be able to double the number of undergraduate nursing students by 2012 with the establishment of the UT Arlington Regional Nursing Education Center. The center is being made possible by $5 million in one-time funds in the state appropriations bill, approved June 19.
STARS stands for: Stimulating interest in nursing; Tutoring and mentoring students; Assisting with career and financial resources; Recruiting and retaining pre-nursing and upper-division nursing students; Strengthening the health-care community with BSN-prepared nurses from diverse backgrounds.
