ARLINGTON - Demand for parking on the UT Arlington campus is at an all-time high. With more than 28,000 students enrolled in the fall 2009 semester, the University had sold 1,600 more parking decals by early September as it had at the same point last year.
Popular student lots can become congested during peak class times, particularly from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday. But spaces remain open throughout the day at several exterior lots.
Here are eight things to know about navigating campus parking and maximizing available services:
1. Avoid the busiest lots when possible. Most students attempt to park in Lot 47, north of Mitchell Street, east of Pickard Hall and west of Kalpana Chawla Hall. Others search for spaces in Lots 39, 40, 42 and 43 at the northeastern corner of campus.
2. Lots 49 and 50, known generally as the "South 40," and Lot 26 at Maverick Stadium have open spaces each day and have convenient shuttle service from the designated shuttle stop. The UTA Shuttle Service also stops at Lot 27 along Davis Drive, near the UT Arlington police station.
3. Get a refund by trading in your full-access campus parking decal for a "R" remote lot pass. Students who bought a full-access parking decal paid $112.50 for the academic year. A "remote" decal costs $45. Parking Office staff at the J.D. Wetsel Building, 1225 W. Mitchell St., will refund any student who trades in a full-access decal for an "R" decal $67.50.
4. Discover the new shuttle Express Route. The UTA Shuttle Service added a special "Orange" route this semester that delivers passengers to all key buildings on the core campus. Click here to view the 2009-2010 schedule.
5. Know your shuttle route colors. Ride the Green route from the south (Lot 50, etc.) to the core campus. Ride the Blue route from Maverick Stadium lots and points west. Use the Orange shuttle route to navigate around core campus buildings.
6. Build 30 minutes into your schedule. The shuttle service runs on a 15-minute schedule. But you need 30 minutes from the time you park your car to board the shuttle and make sure you get to class on time.
7. Give the new mini-transit bus a try. This vehicle has oversized windows, room for up to 32 passengers and a drop-down ramp to accommodate wheelchairs or passengers using crutches or other support devices. The new mini-transit bus can accommodate three wheelchairs, but each UT Arlington shuttle is wheelchair accessible.
8. Be aware of lot closures before they occur. Visit www.uta.edu/shuttle and check your UT Arlington e-mail account regularly for TrailBlazer or MavWire e-newsletters, which include the latest information regarding Cowboys employee and other special event parking.
