ARLINGTON - First Baptist Church of Arlington has donated about 1.5 acres to The University of Texas at Arlington for a new mixed-use project that includes residence hall space for about 450 students, 1,800 parking spaces and street-level retail suites.
In exchange, the church will have use of up to 400 garage spaces for five hours Sundays and 100 spaces for daytime use Mondays through Saturdays. An exception would be made if the University needs the spaces during the day for functions at the special events center, which will be built south of the garage.
The parking arrangement is outlined in a 30-year-agreement between the University and First Baptist with two, 10-year options for renewal.
The mixed-use residence hall and parking garage will cost an estimated $67 million and is scheduled to open in spring 2012. The $78 million events center will be home to convocations commencement, basketball and volleyball and other community events. It is scheduled to open in January 2012.
The projects are being developed east of South Pecan Street and west of South Center Street on the eastern edge of campus.
