ARLINGTON - Allan Saxe has taken on a new title to go with his long-held monikers of political science professor and philanthropist. With a $1,000 donation to The University of Texas at Arlington for Christmas decorations, he's also now "Santa."
At 7:30 p.m. today, Saxe will light "Santa Saxe's Christmas Tree" on the mall of the University's Central Library mall, 702 Planetarium Place. The event is part of a larger Deck the Mall celebration.
Saxe said he made the donation to brighten up the University's annual Christmas tree lighting by providing more lights and decorations. Professionals installed the lights and ornaments on the permanent evergreen tree in the center of the mall.
The festivities begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Palo Duro Lounge of the E.H. Hereford University Center, 300 W. First St., where visitors can partake of holiday crafts, such as making ornaments, wreaths and stockings. Small trees decorated by University departments and organizations and the UT Arlington Choir will add to the holiday atmosphere.
At 7:15 p.m., the choir will lead the participants in singing carols as they head to the library's mall for the lighting. Saxe will speak to the crowd before flipping the switch on the more than 26,000 lights.
"I'd like to see the lights stay," Saxe said of the lights on other trees and poles around the mall. "It's so beautiful. We could enjoy it all year."
Cookies, snacks, cider and hot cocoa make the free event a sweet treat for families.
