ARLINGTON - Middle school girls from across North Texas will gather at The University of Texas at Arlington on Saturday, Nov. 6, to participate in the 2010 Expanding Your Horizons program.

The event, presented by the UT Arlington Women’s Studies Program, will feature several hands-on workshops designed to get girls excited about math and science.

Some of the workshop topics include “Food for Thought – Biochemistry in the Kitchen,” “Diagnosis Detectives,” “Flying High with Aviation,” “Slime, Sludge & Silly Putty – Precision in Science” and “Home Sweet Home – Make Money Using Math.” Visit this website for the complete list of workshops.

The program will begin at 8 a.m. with a packet pick-up and morning refreshments at the E.H. Hereford University Center, 301 W. First St. Next, students will hear from keynote speaker, Michelle Varnell, wildlife specialist for Cedar Hill State Park. The workshops begin at 9:55 a.m. and follow with a luncheon at noon. Door prizes will be given out at 12:30 p.m., with the conference wrapping up at 12:45 p.m.

Organizers say the program will help girls form personal contacts with women working in the math and science fields. Students will be able to meet other young women interested in math and science. The program is also a good way for girls to find out what they like to do before they have to make up their mind.

The 2010 Expanding Your Horizons Program is partially funded by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Call Desiree Henderson or Roxanne Buil at (817) 272-3131 for more information.
