Protecting the U.S. population at home and on the battlefield is something UT Arlington researchers take seriously. Their endeavors include developing nanoparticles that can detect radiation, manufacturing microrobots for use in surveillance and intelligence gathering, and helping veterans gain more control over prosthetic limbs.
Growing up in Guadalajara, Mexico, Mario Romero-Ortega never imagined that a childhood friend’s accident would eventually shape his career. The tragedy led the UT Arlington bioengineer to study neural interfacing and technology that one day could enable amputees to control and feel bionic limbs.
Making the United States safer from the threat of dirty bombs and other radiation dispersal devices is the goal of a team of UT Arlington researchers. And it all starts with something thousands of times smaller than the width of a human hair—a nanoparticle.
Some veterans attending UT Arlington experience challenges in the classroom. Dung Mai, for example, struggles taking tests. The research of Alexa Smith-Osborne and Hanli Liu may help the exercise science major learn why.
In a way, Seong Jin Koh’s research is about doing more with less. “More” is quick and early detection of harmful things. “Less” is detecting them on a DNA level with nanoscale technology.
At UT Arlington’s Texas Microfactory, an interdisciplinary group of researchers creates and pilot-produces tiny robots that could transform the defense industry. Automation and Robotics Research Institute Director Harry Stephanou, who oversees the effort, says the versatile devices can be used for surveillance, crowd control, intelligence gathering, border management, and other functions.
