McNair Scholars Services Offered
The UT Arlington McNair Scholars Program offers a wide array of services to aid participants to reach their full academic and professional potential. Seminars, the McNair research institute and internship, guidance with the graduate application process, conference participation and graduate school visits, among other benefits, provide information and opportunities enabling Scholars to gain admittance to graduate programs and receive the funding necessary to persist to acquisition of the Ph.D.
Each summer, the McNair Scholars Program provides GRE preparation for its research interns via two four-week on campus review courses (quantitative and verbal/analytical writing). GRE prep materials (review book plus CD) are provided to McNair interns.
Graduate School Preparation
The McNair Scholars Program is designed to prepare qualified UTA undergraduates for graduate study beginning by at least the fall semester after graduation and culminating in the Ph.D. The program thus provides many benefits to assist Scholars to become more competitive in the graduate school application process, leading to their admission to top-ranked programs and facilitating a smooth integration into graduate-level work.
McNair Reference Library materials are located in the McNair computer lab and are available only to UTA McNair Scholars. Such materials include publications on improving academic performance, research methods and scholarly writing, preparing for the GRE, applying to graduate school, finding an academic position, etc. Although most books may be checked out, some reference books must be used on site.
Once Scholars have participated in the McNair Summer Research Internship, they are encouraged to present their work at one off-campus conference. This may be a McNair (or other) undergraduate research conference or a professional conference. Limited travel funds are available through the McNair program for conference participation or graduate school visits. Scholars are urged to complete a Travel Request form, providing details about the conference ( or graduate school visit ) at least three to four weeks prior to the event. All requests for travel must be approved by the McNair director.
The McNair program has a small computer lab (containing two PCs) available to Scholars to check e-mail, work on class assignments, practice for the GRE, write summer research papers, and explore graduate programs and fellowships.
The McNair program also has two laptops to lend to its Scholars for academic use. Only Scholars in good standing (active program participants) may borrow a laptop. During the fall and spring semesters, the maximum borrowing period is seven days . Due to increased demand during the summer internship, the borrowing period is limited to four days between July 1 and August 10. Prompt return of the laptop in good condition is considered in future lending decisions.
The McNair program works with both Student Support Services and University Tutorial to ensure that those students in need of tutoring acquire it.
UTA McNair Research Journal
Each spring, the McNair Scholars Program publishes the UTA McNair Research Journal highlighting scholar research from the preceding summer and other program events.
National McNair Senior Directory
Each summer, the McNair program submits scholar's names and intended areas of graduate study to a national database of rising McNair seniors. This database is sent to U.S. graduate schools that use it to recruit McNair Scholars to their programs.
Free UTA Transcripts
UTA makes free transcripts available to McNair Scholars for scholarship, fellowship and graduate school applications. Scholars can only access such transcripts through McNair program staff.
Special McNair Funding
McNair Scholars are eligible for graduate school application fee waivers or special funding at many U.S. universities.
UTA waives the graduate school application fee for McNair Scholars with verification of active program participation (provided by McNair office).
McNair Scholars are recognized nationwide as participating in a competitive graduate school preparatory program.
At UTA, McNair Scholars receive special McNair program graduation cord and are noted as program participants in the graduation program booklet.
