ATRC (Academic Tutoring and Resource Center)

The purpose of the after-school tutoring program is to give Upward Bound students the support they need to achieve academically in their present school courses and to prepare them to succeed in college after high school graduation. To accomplish these goals, the program provides:
1. tutorial assistance,
2. additional learning resources, such as computers and a library containing research materials, study guides, career books, and college catalogs,
3. personal, career, and academic counseling, and
4. an environment conducive to productive study.
Each of these aspects of the program will be explained in more detail after a few preliminaries are discussed.

The Academic Tutoring and Resource Center
The after-school tutoring program is conducted in the Academic Tutoring and Resource Center (the ATRC, for short), which occupies most of the seventh floor of Carlisle Hall at UTA. The ATRC consists of several tutoring rooms, a computer room, and a library. It is supervised by the Academic Specialist.

Hours of operation will be from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Staff persons cannot stay past 7:00 p.m.
Based on the school they attend, students will be assigned a specific day at the ATRC, but they can also attend additional days if they wish and can arrange transportation.
Any student who has serious need of extra tutoring, should make that need known to the Upward Bound staff. In some cases, it may be possible for us to arrange transportation. Parents who have students at the various schools are encouraged to make car-pooling arrangements for days when bus transportation is not available.

Student Responsibilities During After-School Tutoring
1. Students who come to the Academic Tutoring and Resource Center for after-school tutoring must behave in a manner that is consistent with the stated purposes and procedures of the program as a whole and the ATRC in particular.
2. Students are responsible for bringing the books and supplies necessary for doing their homework and being tutored in any subjects in which they need help. Students should bring textbooks, assignment sheets, worksheets, returned tests, and progress reports relating to any classes in which they are not doing well. Students should bring the textbooks to accompany any worksheets they bring to work on. Students are expected to bring all necessary materials for working on at least two subjects. No one should come to tutoring empty-handed.
3. Although the Academic Specialist and the tutors will make every effort to find out what help each student needs, it is the student's responsibility to request needed tutoring.
4. Students are expected to use their time at the ATRC in a productive manner. If they are not in danger of failing any classes and have completed all homework, they should be reading, studying for upcoming tests, researching colleges and careers, or using the other resources available in the library and the computer room to improve their skills. Students should come prepared to apply themselves for the entire time they are here. There will be no sleeping, daydreaming, personal grooming, note-writing, or other forms of time-wasting.

Transportation
Bus transportation from selected schools to UTA and from UTA back to those schools is provided by Upward Bound on one specified tutoring day each week. Students and their parents should consult the bus schedule located elsewhere in the handbook for schools served each day and departure and arrival times. Parents are responsible for providing their student with transportation home from the school drop-off point. Students may make other arrangements for transportation to and from UTA if their parents permit them to do so.
Those parents who drive to campus should park in visitor parking across Cooper Street at Davis Hall or north of Border Street near the Social Work Complex. Parents who regularly drive to UTA may wish to purchase a parking hang-tag from the UTA Police office at 700 S. Davis for a small fee. The hang-tag will allow the parent a choice of more convenient parking locations, subject to availability.
Students and parents should realize that there is no parking close to Carlisle Hall, even for staff. Parents are responsible for any parking violations they incur. Back to Top
