Service Benefits

Upward Bound provides its participants with a wide range of free services aimed at improving their academic skills and their motivation and determination to pursue a post-secondary education. The purpose and allowable activities support the National Education Goals.

Individual Service Plan (ISP)

A component of Academic Progress Plan is the Individual Service Plan (ISP). The Individual Service Plan (ISP) is based on each student's academic needs.

Individual Service Plans may include the following:

decision making, time management, grooming for success, note taking, critical thinking, stress management, active reading

content area math, science, English, foreign language, history

self awareness social, interpersonal, dependability, citizenship, maturity

self discovery student profile, personal mission statement, college & career assessments
writing essays, resume, creative /technical writing, speeches

Career development workshops and cultural & educational trips

Academic Progress Plan (APP)

The APP serves to fulfill academic and career requirements by grade level. The Upward Bound Program will provide the following academic advisement services to participants in the effort of promoting high school graduation and increasing post-secondary education success.

The American School Counselor Association recommends a maximum ratio of 1 Counselor per 250 students. The Texas School Counselor Association, Texas Association of Secondary School Principals, and the Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association have recommended ratios of 1 per 350. Current reports reveal that both the AISD and GPISD exceed both recommendations with an average ratio of 390:1.

Upward Bound supplements the effort of the target schools' counselors by providing academic, career & college readiness advisement.
