UTA electrical engineering professor earns society’s highest award

Faculty honor

A longtime UTA electrical engineering professor has been named a Fellow of SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics. J.-C. Chiao was recognized for achievements in micro medical devices and systems. He has 11 patents and will be formally inducted as a Fellow Jan. 30.

Sedrick Huckaby, UTA Assistant Professor of Art, received the Moss/Chumley North Texas Artist Award from the Meadows Museum. Huckaby was called an "interpreter and innovator" and was noted as a community advocate for the visual arts.

UTA students graduate with the second lowest debt in the nation, according to U.S. News and World Report. The University is the only Texas school listed on the magazine's map of institutions where graduates have the least debt.

Preserving history

A UTA history professor is fighting time to save historical documents in Cuba before they are lost to the elements. David LaFevor, a UTA history professor, has been working on saving the documents since 2015. Many of the documents shed light on the slave trade, an integral part of Cuba’s colonial history that was intertwined with that of the United States.
