of Texas at Arlington is an educational leader in the heart of the Dallas-Fort
Worth Metroplex. Founded in 1895 as a private liberal arts institution,
UT Arlington achieved senior college status in 1959 and became part of The
University of Texas System in 1965.
The University's nearly 25,000 students
pursue more than 180 bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in an extensive
range of disciplines. Of UT Arlington's 125,000 alumni, 88,000
live in North Texas. Their presence helps the University create an annual economic
impact
of $1 billion on the region.

UT Arlington embraces an active-learning environment that places students
at the center of the learning process. Many of the University's 1,100
faculty are recognized nationally and internationally for their teaching
and research
expertise as well as their community service. UT Arlington is one of only
seven universities in Texas and one of two in North Texas with an Honors
College.
- The School of Architecture holds first place (tied with Rice
University) in the "Most Innovative Architecture Program" category by Design
Intelligence Journal.
- The Studio Arts Center's spacious facilities for glass,
neon, painting, sculpture, metals, clay and printmaking attract some
of the country's most talented art students to UT Arlington.
- The College of
Business Administration has the largest executive MBA program in China.
- The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education magazine selected UT Arlington
as one of the top 100 four-year colleges for Hispanics in 2006.

News & World
Report recently named three UT Arlington distance education programs among
the best in the nation.
- Statewide partnerships with UT Austin, Rice University
and UT Dallas have established internationally recognized programs
in nanotechnology. Collaborations with UT Dallas and North Lake College

School of Urban and Public Affairs is listed among the nation's best graduate

- Located in downtown Fort Worth, the UT Arlington

The Carnegie
Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching classifies UT Arlington
as a Research University/High
Activity. Since the 2001 fiscal year, research expenditures have grown nearly 70 percent, with the largest increases coming since 2005. In 2006-07, research expenditures reached $40 million for the first time. As research grants and contracts have increased, so have the number of invention disclosures, patent applications and licensing agreements.
- Biochemistry researchers are exploring ways to reduce the debilitating side effects
of chemotherapy and radiation treatments on cancer patients.
- Engineers
in the
Nanotechnology Research and Teaching Facility are manipulating individual
atoms and molecules that could herald the next electronics revolution.
- Psychology professors are studying areas of the brain that, through
proper drug management
techniques, decrease the perception of pain.
- The School of Nursing's Smart Hospital opened in 2007 and features more than 30 full-body patient simulators in a 23-bed simulated environment. It is one of six sites recognized as a Center of Excellence in Simulation by Laerdal Medical.
- Electrical and industrial engineering researchers are developing
the Texas
Radio Frequency Innovation and Technology Center, a consortium of
UT Arlington, UT Dallas, the University of North Texas and North
Lake College, to study
methods of automatic identification and data capture.
- Professors
in the College of Education are studying the effects of exercise
and weight loss
on sleep quality and quantity.
- Faculty in the Bioengineering Department,
in association with UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, are
conducting research in optical medical imaging. These investigators
seek improved surgical
procedures for implanting deep brain stimulators to combat cancer.

UT Arlington's tree-lined campus encompasses 420 acres and
more than 100
buildings in the center of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. The
University continues to expand and upgrade its facilities to meet
growing demand.
- The
Chemistry and Physics Building opened in spring 2006 and features
more than 124,000 square feet of research space and a state-of-the-art
planetarium open to the public. Texas Architect magazine says it "raises the bar of design sophistication on the UTA campus."
- Construction on an $80 million engineering research building is expected to begin in 2008. It will be the largest structure on campus and include a component for science research. Other planned projects include the Center for Structural Engineering Research and a civil engineering facility.
- The Central Library, two branch libraries and
four electronic libraries cumulatively house more than a million
physical volumes and provide
access to more than 37,000 full-text print and electronic periodicals
and newspapers as well as other media.
- Located in Fort Worth about
10 miles
from the main UT Arlington campus, the Automation & Robotics
Research Institute stimulates economic growth through research and
manufacturing
extension programs.
- The Maverick Activities Center opened in September and has quickly become popular among students, faculty, staff and alumni. It features 90 cardio machines, three circuit weight systems and a complete set of free weights.
- UT Arlington operates 10 computer
labs. The largest
is the three-story Ransom Hall facility, open 24 hours a day, seven
days a week.

UT Arlington's diverse group of students hails
from all corners
of the United States and almost 130 countries. Nearly 300
campus organizations give students myriad opportunities to become active
participants in the
Maverick community.
- Campus housing accommodates more than 4,400
students, including 421 in Kalpana Chawla Hall. Named for the alumna
who died aboard
the Space Shuttle Columbia, KC Hall houses UT Arlington's first
living/learning program.
- The UT Arlington Mavericks field NCAA Division
I men's teams in
basketball, baseball, indoor and outdoor track and field, cross
country, tennis and golf, and women's teams in basketball, softball,
volleyball,
indoor and outdoor track and field, cross country and tennis. The
wheelchair basketball team has won seven national championships.
- The Department of Campus Recreation features informal recreation, intramural sports, a wellness program, sport clubs and aquatics. Phase I of the Maverick Activities Center features a 20,000-square-foot weight and fitness room as well as an Internet café, smoothie bar and lounge/study areas.
- Nationally known entertainers, musical acts
and speakers highlight a year-round calendar of Maverick activities. Among those who have recently appeared on campus are Laura Bush, Benazir Bhutto, Ben Stein, Bill Bradley, Gabriel Iglesias, Switchfoot, Rihanna and Ludacris.
Popular annual events
include MavsMeet, Graduation Celebration, Parents Weekend, Academic
Excellence Week, Maverick Stampede, the Big Event community service
day, International
Week, Homecoming, Activities Fair Day, Bed Races and the Oozeball
Mud Volleyball Tournament.
- UT Arlington's Greek organizations annually contribute more
than 10,500 community service hours to local and national philanthropic
groups.
