Thus the areas beneath them are unappreciated, a little foreboding, and passed through quickly. But Bryce Bennett ’13 views these spaces as calm and peaceful, as devoid of human existence as the mountains and vast wilderness of his native Montana. In his photographic series Beneath, he seeks to capture that feeling by presenting images that are warm, elegant, and inviting. “I wanted to capitalize on the intimate light that most of the spaces have and use that light to show the beauty of each setting,” he says. “I wanted the viewer to find that beauty within a specific environment they never considered to begin with.” For his work as an undergraduate, which included this series and others, Bennett in May received the UT System Board of Regents’ Outstanding Student Award in Arts and Humanities. “I have found the Art Department at UT Arlington to cultivate an open-minded and diverse environment for a young artist,” he says. “It has allowed my creativity and conceptual processes to progress in ways I never thought possible.”

Think of it as an opportunity to peruse fine works by some of the nation’s leading artists. Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport is home to $6 million in commissioned paintings, sculptures, and mosaic floor medallions. At Love Field in Dallas, a modernization project is transforming the airport into another place to see outstanding art. The Gallery at UTA recently hosted “Flight Deck: Public Art at DFW and Love Field” showcasing the airport displays. The exhibit featured established art as well as models of forthcoming work intended for both locations. “Public art humanizes the public space and makes it more inviting,” says art Professor Benito Huerta, who curated the exhibit. “The airport is the first impression for visitors to the Metroplex, and the art gives that impression depth as to the diversity of ideas, expression, and culture within our community.”

African-American History http://www.uta.edu/utamagazine/archive-issues/2010-13/2012/12/african-american-history/ http://www.uta.edu/utamagazine/archive-issues/2010-13/2012/12/african-american-history/#comments Mon, 10 Dec 2012 18:50:27 +0000 utarlington http://www.uta.edu/utamagazine/archive-issues/2010-13/?p=6264 [...]]]> Little-known aspects of U.S. history shape much of painter Burl Washington’s nationally recognized artwork. With a keen eye for detail, the UT Arlington alumnus and Fort Worth resident captures bygone events that made America great but often are omitted from history books. “When I was growing up, history was boring. Now it’s just a gold mine,” he says. “The more you dig, the more you find. It’s inspiring.” Washington, who works primarily with watercolor and watercolor board, often focuses on buffalo soldiers, African-American cowboys, and women of the West. With work on display internationally and with featured exhibits at the Booth Western Art Museum in Carterville, Ga., and the National Buffalo Soldiers Museum in Houston, he is educating people with his artistic vision of history. “There’s just a lot of our history that people don’t know about, and I want to bring it to their attention. That’s the whole thing. I want people to walk away from my art and be as inspired as I was when I made it.”

Printmaking http://www.uta.edu/utamagazine/archive-issues/2010-13/2012/07/printmaking/ http://www.uta.edu/utamagazine/archive-issues/2010-13/2012/07/printmaking/#comments Thu, 26 Jul 2012 11:06:01 +0000 utarlington http://www.uta.edu/utamagazine/archive-issues/2010-13/?p=5864 [...]]]> Looking within ourselves helps make us who we are. For art Associate Professor Nancy Palmeri, self-reflection is a constant theme. With a focus on printmaking and drawing, Palmeri thrives on the hands-on nature of her art as it examines family, religion, gender, and childhood. Printmaking involves transferring ink from a matrix or through a prepared screen to a sheet of paper or other material. Common matrices include metal plates, blocks of wood, and linoleum. “For me, it’s important to maintain the unvarnished authenticity of the processes,” she says. “Within these traditional media, I still find a heterogeneous world in which to balance form and content.” Palmeri’s work has received international recognition and is featured in the collections of the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University Art Museums, The Royal Museum of Fine Art in Antwerp, Belgium, the Instituto per la Cultura e l’arte in Catania, Italia, and numerous others. She received a fellowship for her work at the Frans Masereel Graphic Arts Center in Kasterlee, Belgium.
