This summer Mavericks took to social media to help fund the Graduates of the Last Decade (GOLD) Alumni scholarship program. More than 200 donors contributed to GOLD, which ran from July through August, reaching the project’s goal of raising $10,000 to create 10 scholarships for deserving Mavericks. In addition, 283 alumni pledged an additional $10,070 for a total commitment of $20,070.
The donations, which could be made in various amounts from $10 to $200, will fund at least 10 more $1,000 scholarships.
“Joining alumni giving challenges like this is an easy way for recent alumni to make an impact and stay connected to UTA,” says Valerie Cavanagh, director of annual giving. “We’re thrilled that so many alumni participated—this challenge really demonstrates the power of collective giving.”
Alumni were encouraged to make a donation, then share the news with 10 people from their graduating class via social media. Dial-A-Mav student callers also connected with recent alumni to share the project and encourage participation.
The effort utilized the new SPARK UTA crowdfunding platform. SPARK UTA advances innovation, teaching, and learning at the University through projects focused on student groups, the student experience, athletics, library, faculty-specific initiatives, and other areas. The platform allows UTA to showcase exciting and engaging ideas from across campus. Donors can follow campaign progress on the SPARK UTA website, spark.uta.edu.
Donations to projects featured on SPARK UTA are considered charitable contributions to the University.
