1960s  Alex Burton

Longtime radio and TV personality Alex Burton died Sept. 13 in Dallas. He was 80. A 1981 UT Arlington Distinguished Alumnus, Mr. Burton earned a bachelor’s degree in political science in 1967. He worked at radio stations in the Rio Grande Valley and at a San Antonio TV station before joining WBAP-TV in Fort Worth. He was news director for Channel 39 in Dallas before moving to KRLD radio for 20 years. He also worked for WBAP radio, retiring from daily broadcasting in 1994. He was inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame, and the Dallas Press Club honored him as a Living Legend of North Texas Journalism. Noted: December 12, 2012


Faculty and Staff  Truman Black

A professor emeritus in the Physics Department, Truman Black died Sept. 12 in Arlington. He was 74. Dr. Black retired in 2011 after 45 years on the UT Arlington faculty. A pioneer in solid-state research, he generated millions of research dollars for students and equipment, helped create physics graduate programs, and wrote more than 100 publications. He was known for his liquid nitrogen demonstrations that educated children through the Young People’s University. Black supervised the dissertation and thesis research of five doctoral students and 23 master’s students, and mentored dozens of undergraduates. Noted: December 12, 2012

(’76 BBA, Business Administration), 58, Aug. 18 in Fort Worth. Mr. Anable was a certified public accountant and a founding partner of Anable & Associates in Fort Worth. Previously, he worked in the accounting and tax industry with KPMG Peat Marwick, Coopers & Lybrand, Texas American Bank, Interfirst Bank, Leonard Enterprises, and Chapdelaine & Associates. 1980s  Susan Margaret Ponce

(’85 BA, Political Science), 49, May 16 in Houston. Honored as a UT Arlington Distinguished Alumna in 2006, Ms. Ponce was a lawyer and senior vice president for Halliburton, which provides products and services to the energy industry. During 22 years with the company, she developed the Environmental Law Practice Group, oversaw 15 offices worldwide as chief commercial counsel, and became the company’s first chief ethics and compliance officer. (’78 MA, Urban Affairs), 60, Aug. 16 in Savannah, Ga. Ms. Marietta was the budget and research director for the city of Dallas before going on to manage finances for three New Mexico state agencies.
