Little-known aspects of U.S. history shape much of painter Burl Washington’s nationally recognized artwork. With a keen eye for detail, the UT Arlington alumnus and Fort Worth resident captures bygone events that made America great but often are omitted from history books. “When I was growing up, history was boring. Now it’s just a gold mine,” he says. “The more you dig, the more you find. It’s inspiring.” Washington, who works primarily with watercolor and watercolor board, often focuses on buffalo soldiers, African-American cowboys, and women of the West. With work on display internationally and with featured exhibits at the Booth Western Art Museum in Carterville, Ga., and the National Buffalo Soldiers Museum in Houston, he is educating people with his artistic vision of history. “There’s just a lot of our history that people don’t know about, and I want to bring it to their attention. That’s the whole thing. I want people to walk away from my art and be as inspired as I was when I made it.”

Looking within ourselves helps make us who we are. For art Associate Professor Nancy Palmeri, self-reflection is a constant theme. With a focus on printmaking and drawing, Palmeri thrives on the hands-on nature of her art as it examines family, religion, gender, and childhood. Printmaking involves transferring ink from a matrix or through a prepared screen to a sheet of paper or other material. Common matrices include metal plates, blocks of wood, and linoleum. “For me, it’s important to maintain the unvarnished authenticity of the processes,” she says. “Within these traditional media, I still find a heterogeneous world in which to balance form and content.” Palmeri’s work has received international recognition and is featured in the collections of the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University Art Museums, The Royal Museum of Fine Art in Antwerp, Belgium, the Instituto per la Cultura e l’arte in Catania, Italia, and numerous others. She received a fellowship for her work at the Frans Masereel Graphic Arts Center in Kasterlee, Belgium.

With the right kindling, one idea can set the world on fire. This concept motivates photojournalist Dominic Bracco II. The former Shorthorn photographer has documented the horrors of Mexico’s drug war through images of violence and its aftermath, as well as grieving families and tender scenes of day-to-day urban life. “I feel I have an obligation to produce work that will hopefully educate and evoke change,” he says. “There is a reality that every time I begin working, I am in danger. Sometimes I find myself thinking it’s not worth it, but then I am reminded constantly that it is.” Bracco’s photos are at the heart of a free exhibit, Life and Death in the Northern Pass, which runs through Jan. 14, 2012, in the Central Library’s sixth floor parlor. He also lectured as part of the College of Liberal Arts’ Festival of Ideas, an annual series of events that focuses on cultural and intellectual issues. “I have been working to step back a bit from traditional distribution models for photography,” he says. “An exhibition at a college campus in an event like the Festival of Ideas allows for the kind of environment that will stir discussion in ways that a few pictures in a newspaper could not.”

The tapestry of art is woven with history, a fact that Sedrick Huckaby celebrates in his own art, which is inspired by his family, faith, and heritage. Huckaby’s canvases and works on paper depicting African-American quilting traditions recently were part of a two-person show at The Gallery at UT Arlington. “Sometimes I see the quilts as the African-American woman’s jazz—a circle of women conversing, improvising, and making rhythmic beauty together,” says the visiting assistant professor of art. “There is a great joy in doing these works because I am one of the few people in the world who could say he is doing a jam session with Grandma.” Huckaby, who has won the Joan Mitchell Foundation Award, the Lewis Comfort Tiffany Award, and a Guggenheim Fellowship Award, achieves with his art what most every artist seeks: to connect individual experience to a greater collective truth. “I’m always trying to relate personal concerns with larger, universal ones. So many of these pieces have personal, social, and spiritual implications.”
