Multi-Modal Skin Garments for Healthcare and Home Robots

With the support of a National Science Foundation grant, we are concurrently tackling the research challenges related to the design, fabrication, integration and use of multimodal sensor skin and garments as an interface between robots and humans. UTARI’s research into robotic skin and clothing technology focuses on the use of Micro ElectroMechanical Systems (MEMS) embedded in special polymer and silicone materials that can be cast on robot surfaces. The use of this type of interface makes it possible for robots to operate more safely in a variety of environments and to interact more effectively with humans and with other robotic platforms.
