Chapter 35 Survivors and Dependents Assistance

Dependents' Educational Assistance provides education and training opportunities to eligible dependents of certain veterans. The program offers up to 45 months of education benefits. These benefits may be used for degree and certificate programs, apprenticeship, and on-the-job training. If you are a spouse, you may take a correspondence course. Remedial, deficiency, and refresher courses may be approved under certain circumstances. This program is also commonly known as Chapter 35.

INITIAL CERTIFICATION

Step 1

Complete VA Form 22-5490 or VA Form 22-5495 via vets.gov

Step 2

Submit the required documents to the UTA VA Office:

  • VA Certificate of Eligibility

  • Official Degree Plan, signed by your Academic Advisor (classes enrolled in must be listed)

Step 3

Complete UTA's Certify Online Form EACH semester by the deadline. Deadlines are available on the VA Home Page.

RENEWAL CERTIFICATION - required EACH semester

Step 1

Submit an updated Official Degree Plan, signed by your Academic Advisor IF courses you are enrolled in are not on file with the UTA VA Office.

Step 2

Complete UTA's Certify Online Form EACH semester by the deadline. Deadlines are available on the VA Home Page.
