The     <a href=\"http://ling.uta.edu/\">Department of Linguistics and TESOL</a> chair helps Native American tribes in Oklahoma bring their languages back to common use. &#8220;We work with tribal members to breathe new life into the languages,&#8221; she says. &#8220;They aren&#8217;t dead; they are sleeping.&#8221; Oklahoma is home to 39 indigenous languages, and two of Dr. Fitzgerald&#8217;s projects document and revitalize the languages for the next generation. </p>     <p>In May 2012 she and Mary Linn at the University of Oklahoma will run the Oklahoma Breath of Life Workshop for communities whose languages have no fluent first-language speakers. Fitzgerald and her students also assist the Chickasaw nation, which has only 80 fluent speakers. </p>",

description2:"<p>Growing up in Guadalajara, Mexico, Mario Romero-Ortega never imagined that a childhood friend&#8217;s accident would eventually shape his career. The tragedy led the UT Arlington     <a href=\"http://www.uta.edu/bioengineering/\">bioengineer</a> to study neural interfacing and technology that one day could enable amputees to control and feel bionic limbs.</p>     <p>Working with a $2.2 million grant from DARPA, the research and development office for the Department of Defense, Dr. Romero-Ortega is helping thousands of U.S. soldiers who have been wounded and lost one or more limbs by understanding why current peripheral nerve interfaces fail. He hopes his neural interface will lead to a better prosthetic arm with more movement and even sensation.</p>     <p>Research like Romero-Ortega&#8217;s offers hope for recent social work graduate Anthony Pone. &#8220;It&#8217;s like a bright light and gives us another option,&#8221; says the Army veteran and wheelchair basketball player, who uses a prosthetic and a wheelchair.</p>",

The collection also contains significant holdings from Texas, Bolivia, Cameroon, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guyana, Honduras, and Mexico.&#160;</p>     <p>Along with several thousand fluid preserved specimens, the Amphibian and Reptile Diversity Research Center houses a sizeable osteological collection, audio recordings of frog calls, one of the largest collections of herpetological photographs in the United States, and a comprehensive herpetological library. Having these resources close at hand has proved invaluable for Department of Biology faculty and students, as well as visiting researchers from around the country. </p>",
