The Department of Linguistics and TESOL chair helps Native American tribes in Oklahoma bring their languages back to common use. “We work with tribal members to breathe new life into the languages,” she says. “They aren’t dead; they are sleeping.” Oklahoma is home to 39 indigenous languages, and two of Dr. Fitzgerald’s projects document and revitalize the languages for the next generation.
In May 2012 she and Mary Linn at the University of Oklahoma will run the Oklahoma Breath of Life Workshop for communities whose languages have no fluent first-language speakers. Fitzgerald and her students also assist the Chickasaw nation, which has only 80 fluent speakers.

Working with a $2.2 million grant from DARPA, the research and development office for the Department of Defense, Dr. Romero-Ortega is helping thousands of U.S. soldiers who have been wounded and lost one or more limbs by understanding why current peripheral nerve interfaces fail. He hopes his neural interface will lead to a better prosthetic arm with more movement and even sensation.
Research like Romero-Ortega’s offers hope for recent social work graduate Anthony Pone. “It’s like a bright light and gives us another option,” says the Army veteran and wheelchair basketball player, who uses a prosthetic and a wheelchair.

The Smart Hospital is a 23-bed simulated environment in a 13,000-square-foot facility featuring a seven-bed emergency services department, four-bed intensive care unit, two-bed NICU, three-bed pediatric unit, four-bed medical-surgical unit, two labor and delivery suites, a team training room, and a family health and wellness room.

The Maverick Activities Center, a $34.5 million recreation facility, is approximately 190,000 sq. ft. and includes:
Collaboration and research form the foundation for the 234,000-square-foot building, the centerpiece of the Research Quadrangle.
", description2:"The state-of-the-art structure houses laboratories, classrooms, and office space to accommodate many of the national research projects of the College of Engineering and the College of Science.
A March 4 ribbon cutting heralded completion of the building, which opened for classes and research in January 2011. The Bioengineering Department and some College of Science faculty work together in the four-story east wing on research into medical imaging, tissue engineering, and other issues that impact health and daily living. The Computer Science and Engineering Department occupies the six-story north wing. Researchers there delve into a range of database issues as well as human-centered computing for homes and hospitals, among other projects.
