Introduction to the Women's & Gender Studies Internship
WOMS 4393 is a supervised internship through which students apply the academic skills they have acquired in Women's and Gender Studies courses by working in a related business or non-profit environment.
The student intern commits to working for a designated organization for approximately 9 hours a week for 13 weeks during a semester in an unpaid position. During that time, the student will be trained and supervised by an employee of the organization, who will keep track of the student's hours, as well as evaluating the student's work. The student will also meet regularly with the Director of Women's & Gender Studies to report on his/her progress, and will turn in a written report on his/her experiences at the end of the semester.
There are currently 7 organizations who are paired with the Women's & Gender Studies Internship Program. Girls, Inc., located in Arlington, requires 30 hours of advance training, and the student intern will be volunteering for after-school programs, supervising and educating girls, among other tasks. The National Cowgirl Museum, located in Fort Worth's Cultural District, welcomes student interns to assist with museum exhibits, office duties, and special projects. Planned Parenthood, located in North Dallas and/or on UTA campus, uses student interns in their Public Affairs Office (campus organizing), or in their Development Office (fundraising). There are no health clinic duties. The Resource Center Dallas is located in Dallas, and cites several opportunities for student interns, ranging from the Nutrition Center, Client Services, Fundraising, Latino Heath Programs, to Special Skills Volunteers (those who are graphic artists, calligraphers, bilingual, or with other needed skills). Safe Haven uses student interns for general office assistance, intake of clients, and working with shelter residents. The AIDS Interfaith Network in Dallas would require interns to assist in fundraising efforts through grants activities, research, and events, among other activities. The last organization, Youth First Texas, is located in Dallas, and student interns would work with youth groups, organize events, and assist with special projects.
If you are interested in participating in this program, you will need to submit an application, which includes listing references of 3 UTA faculty members, and providing a Statement of Interest.
