Wednesday, Apr 27, 2022

Congratulations to Dr. Jiwon Suh and Dr. Kathy Lee (Co. PI) for their proposal was selected for the Research and Creative Works Seed Grant Competition for Projects on Cultural and Societal Transformation. Proposal: Still Forever Foreigners? A Needs Assessment by Examining Marginalized East Asian Americans' Perceived Discrimination and Challenges of Ethnic Nonprofit Organizations. This will be the first time this type of grant is offered under the new theme for UTA's Strategic Plan, and Dr. Suh and co-contributor is one of four winners selected. The selection committee is delighted with the proposal and looks forward to the development of this project.

This project examines the factors that may cause structural discrimination against Eastern Asian-Americans (EAAs) and the challenges that EAA ethnic nonprofits need to overcome. Researchers have not paid enough attention to the needs potentially unique to these groups, especially marginalized (elderly, disabled, and low-income) EAAs and EAA ethnic nonprofits faced during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Through this research project, Dr. Suh says, "we aim to develop a training program for ethnic nonprofits to prevent Asian hate crimes and meet the unique needs of EAAs. Also, creating a training program for service learning projects where students can serve and engage with nonprofit organizations and learn about Asian American Pacific Islanders (AAPI) communities."

The decision to submit this proposal for this competition is to use the research findings from the study to help the University better support the AAPI community members who provide critical skills, services, and resources across all industries. These will include education, healthcare, business, technology, and hospitality so that the larger community can prosper and thrive.

Dr. Suh is very ecstatic about this opportunity. "It is an honor to have an excellent opportunity to work on the project, and thank you to those who encouraged me to develop and submit the proposal."

They will receive a $10,000 grant for their proposal, and the award will commence in September.
