Congratulations to English Major Calyha Brown on winning a Friends of the UTA Library Scholarship for McNair Scholars! Her research with Dr. Jim Warren earned top marks from the committee and will also be published in the McNair journal.
According to Calyha, “this research sought to uncover the status of AAVE within the Texas Education System despite, its deviation from ‘standard’ English. We discovered that there is a negative stigma associated with the vernacular due to remnants of institutionalized racism embedded within our education system. Our goal consists of bring awareness to this stigma, finding ways to dismantle these assimilationist educational policies that reinforce white normativity, and promote learning for marginalized groups that will ultimately help equip all students to be successful.”
