The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre is intended for the dedicated and committed student who wishes to pursue a career in musical theatre. This interdisciplinary program involves course work in the core disciplines of music, theatre, and dance, as well as liberal arts courses designed to add historical context and insight into the student’s creative choices through theory and analysis. Our program utilizes the expertise of nationally and internationally recognized faculty from theatre, music, and dance to create a well-rounded artist/scholar.
Over four years the students will have the opportunity to audition for multiple performance experiences including, but not limited to, classic American musicals, modern musicals, operas, operettas, plays with music, cabaret performances, musical revues, workshop/works-in-progress, readings of new musicals, plays, devised performance, and other collaborative, interdisciplinary projects. Students may be cast as early as their first year of enrollment!
BFA Musical Theatre majors are required to audition for every main-stage production and accept any role. Students are encouraged to audition for as many MavLab, Studio, Dance Concerts, and Directing Scenes, as schedules allow.
Auditions consist of portions from two (2) contrasting musical theatre pieces (16-32 bars in length) showing range, storytelling, and variety, as well as a one-minute contemporary monologue from a published play.
To audition, please visit UTA’s Acceptd page!
Acceptance into the BFA Musical Theatre program is contingent upon acceptance to the university. A limited number of students will be accepted into the program to ensure personalized instruction and attention. Please see below for information about the Musical Theater Common Prescreen.
While the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) does not require a Prescreen submission as part of the application process, UTA uses the following criteria for digital audition submissions.
