Dance Minor

About

Dance Minor

The Minor in Dance is intended for students who wish to broaden their knowledge and experience of dance as an art form. This program offers a variety of dance technique and theory courses, working closely with the Department of Theatre Arts to develop a well-rounded artist/scholar. Current dance minors are connecting their dance studies with exercise science, political science, engineering, psychology, linguistics, business, music, architecture, and theatre arts.

An audition for the dance minor is not required. However, students will be placed in appropriate dance technique courses based on their skill level. Students declaring the dance minor must be accepted into the university and be in good academic standing. The minor is intended to be completed in four semesters.

Dance Performance Opportunities

All UTA students have the opportunity to audition for Maverick Dance Company (MDC), a contemporary-based performance group that creates and presents new, progressive dance works for the concert stage. Each semester, MDC produces a formal dance concert as part of the Department of Theatre Arts’ main-stage season. Dance students have opportunities each semester to audition for theatrical productions ranging from classic and modern musicals, plays, and other interdisciplinary projects such as dance for camera and dance in alternative venues.

Maverick Dance Company

Maverick Dance Company directors, choreographers, and performers work collaboratively to create choreography that encompasses many viewpoints. MDC members may also choose to deepen their understanding of choreography with faculty mentoring and development of original works. MDC presents two formal dance concerts each year, participates in on and off campus events, and is venturing into realms of multi-media and site performance. Students must be enrolled in a Dance Performance course to be considered for casting.

Potential student choreographers must be enrolled in or have completed DNCE 2238 Dance Composition. In addition, they must have performed with MDC for at least two semesters or have instructor permission, be in good academic standing at the university, and submit a choreograpphy proposal, MDC Student Choreographer Proposal.

UTA’s Maverick Dance Company is available to perform at most events or venues. Please contact the company’s director, Amanda Jackson.
