Professor John McDermott (1940-2014)

It is with great sadness that the School of Architecture announces the passing of Professor John McDermott on January 2, 2014. 

Born in New York City on May 28, 1940, John McDermott received his bachelor's and MFA degrees from the University of Notre Dame. He served on the faculties of Catholic University, Ohio University and the Ohio State University before joining the University of Texas at Arlington's School of Architecture in 1982, where he served as professor until his death. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Peggy McDermott of Arlington; his son, John James McDermott III and his wife, DeAnn, and his grandson, John Connor McDermott, of El Paso; and his son, Peter Frederick McDermott of Beijing, China.

Professor McDermott was a committed educator and member of the UT Arlington community who was noted for his concern for his students’ well-being and success. Within the mosaic of faculty expertise and approach to teaching, John McDermott provided a perspective that was unique, appreciated and impossible to replace.
