The Getty Sketchbooks
November 9, 2009
The University of Texas at Arlington’s School of Architecture announces an exhibit, “The Getty Sketchbooks,” which is open now in the Architecture Gallery and will continue through November 27, 2009.
In 1993 six internationally acclaimed architects were invited to compete for the commission for the Getty Villa/Museum renovations and expansion in Malibou (re-opened to the public in 2006). In seeking a highly creative architect, each of the finalists was provided an 11×14” bound artist’s sketchbook. The completed sketchbooks were to be returned in two weeks; the architect would be given the commission for this important project based on the contents of the sketchbook.
Submissions were provided by Craig Hodgetts & Hsin-Ming Fung, Franklin Isreal, Gerhard Kallman & Michael McKinnell, Rudolfo Machado & Jorge Silvetti, Juan Navarro-Baldeweg, and Alvaro Siza-Vieira. The traveling exhibition, organized by faculty at the University of Southern California, skillfully and beautifully illustrates concepts and drawings submitted by these prominent architects in their respective sketchbooks.
