UTA alum featured in Southwest Now Magazine for innovative approach to teaching
UTA College of Education alum Cora Garner was recently featured in Southwest Now Magazine for her innovative approach to reaching her students and her commitment to returning to teach in the community join which she grew up. The article, “Rapping Shakespeare”, ran in the magazine’s February 2020 edition.
Cora was recognized as the 2019 Teacher of the Year at DeSoto High School, where she teaches Early College High School English and was also selected as selected as Teacher of the Year by the Southwest Alliance of Black School Educators.
A viral video of Garner rapping Shakespeare’s Rome and Juliet for her DeSoto students went viral last year, catching the attention of educators around the state. She was invited to demonstrate her educational raps with her students at the Texas Education Agency meeting in April 2020.
Cora received her Secondary Teacher Certification in English from UTA's College of Education in 2018. Last year, she was featured in a video produced by UTA’s College of Education, focused on her successful transition from college student to first-year teacher.
