Admissions Process

How to Apply to the PhD in Nursing Program

  1. Prospective students must submit an online application through ApplyTexas and pay the application fee.

The Graduate Admission’s Office is responsible for receiving and processing official transcripts and other required documentation, including calculating the admission GPA. All steps necessary to complete an application (i.e. submitting transcripts, paying fees) must be completed prior to progressing in the application process.

  1. Review of the College of Nursing and Health Innovation (CONHI) graduate program specific requirements. A representative from the Office of Enrollment and Student Services (OESS) will review the application file for nursing specific requirements. Specific program requirements include:

For all Applicants

  • Graduate statistics course with a grade of “B” or higher - *verified on official transcript sent to Graduate Admissions
  • Unencumbered RN license
  • Written statement of goals. See guidelines and instructions. Once complete, submit to PhDinNursing@uta.edu
  • Interview with faculty. Once initial admission criteria are met, applicants will be contacted to schedule an interview

MSN-to-PhD Entry

  • 3.5 GPA on master’s coursework
  • GRE waived

BSN-to-PhD Entry

  • BSN from a CCNE or NLNAC accredited program or equivalent
  • 3.5 GPA on BSN coursework
  • Two years of clinical experience recommended
  • GRE score of ≥ 153 verbal; ≥ 144 quantitative; and analytical/analytical writing ≥ 4. Ask testing agency to send scores to:

International Students

  • For international students, minimal TOEFL score of 550 paper-based, TOEFL score of 79 internet-based (see website for subtest requirements), TSE-A score of 40 or IELTS score of 7.0. Ask testing agency to send scores to:

  1. If accepted, applicants will receive an acceptance form that must be signed and returned. If an applicant is denied, the option to appeal the decision is available.
  2. Once the acceptance form has been completed and returned, an official email notification will be sent from the University’s Graduate Admissions Office to the student’s personal email. Accepted students with transfer credit should submit the transfer request form to the CONHI Academic Advisor. 
  3. An additional welcome email will be sent from PhD in Nursing Program and will include an invitation to the Orientation session.
