Prairie Paws Adoption Center, part of Animal Services in the City of Grand Prairie, provides a safe, healthy, and humane community for the pets of Grand Prairie. We accomplish this through protecting the public and its interests, providing education on responsible pet ownership, housing homeless animals, and placing companion animals.

General Service Needs:

Volunteers assist Prairie Paws staff in providing sanitary, healthy environments for shelter animals to maximize their adoptability. New volunteers must complete 18 hours of Shelter Essentials Training before they can attend an Animal Handling class and be approved for animal handling assignments, such as walking dogs and grooming shelter animals.

From time to time, Prairie Paws also has openings for volunteers to assist with program coordination, such as for the Foster Care program.

Group volunteers are welcome to host independent, offsite fundraising campaigns or supplies collection projects to benefit the shelter animals.

Available Tasks:

Shelter Essentials Training encompasses ongoing cleaning tasks to achieve sanitary conditions and prevent disease, such as washing toys/ dishes, washing/ folding laundry, sanitizing litter boxes/ crates, restocking food/ litter/ supplies, and sweeping and mopping hallways/work areas.

After 18 hours of SET, volunteers will be eligible to attend an Animal Handling class, a requisite for direct animal handling.

Reading Partners mobilizes communities to provide students with the proven, individualized reading support they need to read at grade level by third grade.

We know that reading is the foundation for all future learning, and the ability to read transforms lives and empowers children and communities to reach their full potential.

That’s why we partner with under-resourced schools and engage volunteer reading partners to work one-on-one with students who struggle with reading.

Volunteer Needs:

Volunteers give an hour of their time each week to work one-on-one with the same student in grades K-3 to help them meet their literacy goals.

More than simply reading with a child, our volunteers follow a proven, structured curriculum to help students learn specific skills necessary to become proficient readers. It’s simple, and it works. Each lesson comes with step-by-step instructions and materials. A trained site coordinator is always available to answer questions, assist with the materials, and solve problems.

Address:Volunteer tutoring takes place either virtually over Zoom or in-person at one of our school sites across DISD and FWISD. Volunteers can choose the format and location that is most convenient for them.
