Town hall meetings on campus carry legislation

21 September 2015

Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff:

During the 84th Legislative Session, our lawmakers passed Senate Bill 11 (SB 11), better known as “Campus Carry.” The legislation allows a license holder to carry a concealed handgun on the campus. SB 11 also allows a university to adopt provisions prohibiting handguns in certain buildings; however, the intent of the legislature is to have few such excluded areas, and that a “blanket ban” should not be proposed.

President Karbhari has asked me to chair the university’s campus carry committee. We have three sub-committees focused on the following areas; security and buildings, legal and conduct issues, and communications and training.

Prior to our drafting any provisions for UT System and Board of Regents consideration, we have elected to schedule a series of Town Hall meetings over the next several weeks to have an open dialogue with the campus community and to hear any concerns and suggestions you might have.

The University has also created a website at www.uta.edu/campuscarry. You can find the schedule for the town hall meetings here, as well as responses to frequently asked questions, information on the legislation, and a survey that you can complete and submit if you are not able to attend one of the scheduled meetings.

I look forward to discussing this important legislation with each of you and establishing provisions that will allow the university to be in compliance with Senate Bill 11 and to ensure we maintain a safe and secure campus environment.
