Assembly Locations

Stage Party
  • (Chairs, Associate Deans, Supervising Professors Who Are Hooding A PhD Student): You will assemble in the DOCK. Staff will direct you to this location.
Other Supporting Faculty With No Specific Role:

You are welcome to visit with your students in the gyms where the students are lining up, but the procession will be leaving from the Follett Academic Center opposite Gym A. Drinks and snacks are available in this Center before the ceremony:

After you process into the arena, you will be seated in the first four rows of Sections 101 (faculty from BE, CSE and EE) and 110 (faculty from CE, IMSE, MAE and MSE). These are the sections closest to the stage, to the left and right of the students on the floor. This will provide more comfortable seating than the student seats on the arena floor.

Hooding Procedure for Doctoral Candidates

  1. Watch for your student to approach the announcer. Begin to move to your mark on the stage when the student before them has finished being hooded.
  2. Meet your student between the announcer’s podium and the diploma cover table. The stage will be marked for where you will stand.
  3. Receive your student’s hood with the pointed end up, velvet side facing you and the satin side facing your student.
  4. Have your student turn around to face the audience.
  5. Place the hood over your student’s head.
  6. Tap their shoulder to indicate you are finished and shake their hand.
  7. Return to your seat after finished.
NOTE: PhD graduates are grouped together
  1. Students will be lining up by department (BE, CE, CSE, EE, IMSE, MSE, MAE) and then alphabetically within each department.
  2. If two students have the same supervising (hooding) professor, they will be in order by the last name that comes first in the alphabet.

Be on time (or early, if possible).

Wear comfortable shoes.

You will not be returning to the gyms after the ceremony, so do not bring anything that you cannot carry with you into the arena. (No backpacks, purses, etc.)
