Mr. Caraway will discuss:

  • Some of the various roles that he sees for UTA graduates in the market place,

  • The indispensable role of market modeling in deregulated markets, such as LCG Consulting’s
UPLAN model,
  • The importance of mining the vast amounts of market data that are available in deregulated markets
such as ERCOT and using it to inform decision making, and

  • A brief discussion about how new technologies and policy are impacting the electric power industry
today and in the future.

BIO: Shannon Caraway has had the unique opportunity to be actively involved for nearly three decades in the electric power generation, delivery, and marketing business. Since 1987, he has gained experience in customer operations, distribution engineering, transmission planning, transmission operations, market fundamentals, power marketing, 24x7 generation dispatch, market strategy, market advocacy, solar development and origination, and energy storage evaluation. The first 13 years of his career were spent working in a traditional vertically integrated utility. During this time, he spent 12 years going to college at night while working full-time during the day in pursuit of bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering with a focus in power. He also earned an MBA. In 2001, he transitioned my career to the newly deregulated power markets of ERCOT, PJM, NYISO, and New England applying his diverse professional and educational experience. By 2002, he was asked to begin serving in management roles in the TXU Energy organization. During the past 14 years, he have served as Manager of ERCOT Market Fundamentals, Director of Grid Optimization, Director of North American Power, Gas, Coal, and Emissions Fundamentals, Director of Commercial Asset Optimization in ERCOT, and Vice President of Commercial Asset Management for Luminant Energy, which includes the 24x7 ERCOT QSE Operations.
