CSE Researchers Developing Security Threat Detection System

A team of researchers led by Computer Science & Engineering Professor Sajal Das is creating a novel framework leading to a sophisticated software program that will aid the nation in monitoring, preventing and recovering from natural and inflicted disasters. The five-year project involves personnel from three universities and is funded by a $1.7 million grant from the National Science Foundation’s Information Technology Research Program.

Called Pervasively Secure Infrastructures (PSI), the framework will gather and evaluate information utilizing smart sensors, wireless networks, mobile agents, data mining and profile-based learning to make intelligent decisions and provide security services. The PSI framework can potentially be deployed in a variety of safety, security and surveillance instances, including transportation, public utilities, and public and/or private buildings and gathering places.

Faculty at the University of Kentucky and Pennsylvania State University will join Dr. Das and an interdisciplinary team of co-investigators in the College of Engineering. Each team member brings special knowledge and expertise to the project. Their challenges include data collection and aggregation from seemingly unrelated sensors, profile building and data mining to achieve real-time, secured, authenticated information processing and exchange.

The researchers will be able to make use of advances in information collection, networking and processing already developed at two of the College of Engineering’s research centers – the Center for Research in Wireless Mobility and Networking (CReWMaN) and the Institute for Research in Security (IRIS). Up to four graduate students per year will be assisting in the project. Dr. Das hopes to create a prototype model for airport security and has been in contact with officials at the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and American Airlines.
