Outstanding Engineering Students Receive Performance Awards

Three students in the College of Engineering recently received awards because of their outstanding academic and personal performance. The trio included a freshman, a senior and a graduate student.

The Technical Club of Dallas presented Outstanding Student Awards to civil engineering senior Elizabeth Rivera and mechanical engineering freshman Joonas Ponkala. The Technical Club awards are “given to students who, in the opinion of the faculty, have achieved not only the highest academic scholarship performance but whose significant leadership participation in student and civic affairs exhibit those qualities that best exemplify the future leaders of the engineering and technical professions.”

Rivera maintains a 4.0 GPA and is a member of the National Hispanic Environmental Council and Tau Beta Pi, the national engineering honor society; vice president of Chi Epsilon, the national civil engineering honor society; and treasurer of the American Society of Civil Engineers and. Ponkala has a 4.0 GPA and is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

During UTA’s Annual Celebration of Excellence by Students, biomedical engineering student Jae Gwan Kim received the Dean’s Award for Best Engineering Presentation. Kim described his project “Investigation of Tumor Heterogeneity in Vascular Oxygenation by Needle-like Reflectance Probe and FOXY Sensor.” This is the third time Kim has won the Dean’s Award.
