Materials Science Students Selected for Leadership Training

June 30, 2004

Two graduate students in the Materials Science & Engineering Department of The University of Texas at Arlington have received prestigious scholarships to attend a leadership-training program sponsored by the American Society of Metals (ASM). The ASM’s Materials Education Foundation presented only six of these scholarships worldwide.

Sara Kiani and Anurag Pandey will attend the ASM’s LeaderShape Institute, a six-day program conducted each summer at the University of Illinois. The LeaderShape Institute presents student leaders with ways to meet the changing needs of a diverse world and helps them develop skills that will benefit them personally and that will also be valuable to the companies and industries in which they will work.

The scholarships are valued at $1,400 each and will cover all expenses associated with participating in the program. Each summer session is comprised of approximately 60 students, ages 17 to 25 and from diverse ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds, who are sponsored by various organizations.

Sara Kiani is conducting research in composites with Professor Wen Chan. Anurag Pandey is working with Professor Pranesh Aswath on biodegradable poly-L-lactic acid and polyglycolic acid blends for biomedical applications.
