Dutton Named Chair of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering

Dr. Bill Carroll, dean of The University of Texas at Arlington’s College of Engineering, has announced the appointment of J. Craig Dutton to Professor and Chair of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.

Dr. Dutton was the Donald Biggar Willett Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he earned his Ph.D. His research interests are in compressible separated and mixing flows. He has an extensive research background and has authored or co-authored almost 100 journal articles, more than 100 conference papers, more than 60 technical reports and two book chapters, and co-edited five books.

Professor Dutton is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Texas. His distinguished career includes teaching positions at Texas A&M University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and research positions at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Atlantic Research Corporation.

Dr. Dutton has received numerous awards from Texas A&M and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for outstand teaching, plus from the Society of Automotive Engineers and the American Society for Engineering Education. He has authored or co-authored several books, chapters of several books, and articles in numerous professional journals.

UTA’s mechanical and aerospace engineering programs have experienced a recurring gain in enrollments. Over the past four academic years (2000 - 2003), fall enrollment went from 444 to 805 and this trend is expected to continue for fall 2004.
