Three to Receive Engineering Student Leader Scholarships

Three outstanding students in the University of Texas at Arlington’s College of Engineering will be receiving Student Leader scholarships for the 2005-2006 academic year. The scholarships are sponsored by Lockheed Martin Aeronautics in Fort Worth and are valued at $1,300 each.

Alejandro J. Russo is a junior majoring in Industrial Engineering. He completed a pre-Industrial Engineering program at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru before transferring to UTA. Russo maintains a 3.87 GPA and is a member of the UTA Honors College, student chapters of the Institute of Industrial Engineers and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, and Alpha Pi Mu, the Industrial Engineering honor society. In addition to this Lockheed Martin scholarship, Russo has also received the Igor Freiberg Scholarship, the Presidential Honors Scholarship and the G. T. Stevens Scholarship.

Karina Solorio is a sophomore majoring in Electrical Engineering. She maintains a 3.5 GPA and is a member of the Honors College and the student chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, where she currently holds the office of president. Solorio also served as a Senator in the UTA Student Congress and was treasurer of Freshman Leaders on Campus. In addition to the Lockheed Martin scholarship, Solorio has also received the Leo C. Benavides Award and was named a Richard Greene Scholar, a Penrose Foundation Scholar and a Ventures Scholar.

Herman D. Tarin is a junior majoring in Civil Engineering. He maintains a 3.68 GPA and is a member of Alpha Chi, a national honor society; Sigma Chi; Chi Epsilon, the Civil Engineering honor society; Tau Beta Pi, the national engineering honor society; and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. In addition to the Lockheed Martin scholarship, Tarin has also received a Texas Conditional Grant Program Scholarship and a UTA Civil & Environmental Engineering Department Scholarship.
