ME Senior Wins National Ranking in Wheelchair Basketball

March 12, 2002

Paul Schulte, a mechanical engineering senior at The University of Texas at Arlington, received outstanding recognition from the National Wheelchair Basketball Association, including Player of the Year. Schulte helped his team win the 2002 national collegiate championship on his way to winning these accolades.

Schulte has been a guard on UTA's Movin' Mavs basketball team since 1998 and was hoping to finish his time here with a championship. He did; the team completed a 17-0 record in college competitions, concluding with a 67-58 win over the Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks. In that game, his last in collegiate competitions, Schulte scored 12 points and captured seven rebounds.

In addition to being named Player of the Year, Schulte also was placed on the NWBA's All-American First Team and All-American Academic Team. Mechanical Engineering Adjunct Professor Ray Wimberly praised Schulte's performance as a student. "Paul is in a very tough course called dynamics. He works hard, has an excellent attitude, asks good questions in class and is a very likable person," said Wimberly. "I'm confident that he has a bright future in his chosen career and will be very successful in life."

Schulte was also co-recipient of the Sportsmanship Award.
