Engineering Professor Selected for ONR Summer Fellowship

May 16, 2007

The Office of Naval Research has selected University of Texas at Arlington Computer Science & Engineering Assistant Professor Gergely Zaruba to participate in its prestigious Summer Faculty Fellowship Program. Dr. Zaruba will conduct research at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C.

Participation in the Summer Fellowship Program is highly sought after; Dr. Zaruba was among the more than 500 applicants. About 20 percent of these were selected for the national program, and less than 10 percent will be at the Naval Research Laboratory. Several project managers are involved in the selection process and decide where selected applicants conduct their research.

“I was told to keep an open mind, since for security purposes they don’t tell us what project we will be working on,” said Dr. Zaruba. “However, I expect it will relate to the general area of mobile grid computing and clusters.”

Participants in the 10-week program receive a stipend and travel expenses. “The value of the stipend is minor compared to the practical benefits participants receive,” Dr. Zaruba said. “This is where you develop professional contacts that will guide and benefit your research throughout your career.”
